Steam/Serving Line or Food Service Area
The Steam Line or Food Service Space on the Destroyer was the location where sailors would get theirs trays and eating utensils along with lining up along the steam table to get their "chow". Typically, this space was laid out with a large steam table that used hot water to keep food warm while serving, a salad bar/freezer, a ice cream machine, and racks for metal trays and other eating utensils. Drinks such as coffee, milk, "bug juice", or other beverages were gotten in the Mess Decks space just forward of the Steam Line. Many new recruits on a Destroyer were given mess duty which consisted of manning the food serving line, cleaning the mess decks, and washing in the scullery.
