Ship's Store

The Ship's Store aboard this class of destroyer was located all the way aft and on the portside of the deckhouse. Much like a local convenience store is to civilians, the onboard store allowed sailors to purchase snacks, stationary, toiletry and hygene products, cigarettes, items with the ship's name and image on them, and even gifts that could be sent back home to loved ones while at sea.

It also could be a "hang-out" where sailors could tell stories near one of the ship's scuttlebutts (water fountain). While cigarettes were very popular during the Vietnam War era, other favorites included Vienna sausages, peanuts, spray-on-cheese, soda, Zippo lighters, and film!
