The Mess Decks aboard a Gearing class Destroyer was the location that enlisted sailors ate their meals. watched movies, and used the space as a lounge. The ship's main coffee urn for sailors to warm up before going on watch was located here as well as the ship's library. Sailors entered the compartment from the portside main deck , down a ladder into the serving/steam line area, filled their metal mess trays, ate at the tables, and returned their trays to the Scullery as they exited via the starboard side ladder to the main deck.
Entertainment was provided to this area by the ship's radio entertainment system controlled by Radio Central as well as a television by the mid 1960s. Movies were played via a projector onto a white bedding sheet that was tied across two stanchions. Some sailors on the wrong side of the sheet watched with the images reversed!
